On the afternoon of Wednesday, October 15, the educational community of the Colegio de Bachilleres del Estado de Oaxaca (COBAO) Campus 6, located in the municipality of Putla Villa de Guerrero, Oaxaca, was shaken by a tragic act of violence.
Teacher and psychologist Fabiola Ortiz Medina was shot and killed in front of her students as she left the school after finishing her workday. According to local media outlet RIOaxaca, the attack occurred as the teacher, who taught Educational Guidance, was heading to her vehicle to leave the school.
Suddenly, an armed individual approached her and shot her several times, killing her instantly.
The attack occurred in broad daylight and in front of several students, sparking panic among students, teachers, and parents who were still in the vicinity of the school.
Witnesses notified authorities, and municipal and state police officers, along with agents from the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO), arrived at the scene to cordon off the area and retrieve the body.
So far, authorities have not reported the arrest of those responsible or a possible motive for the crime, although it was confirmed that an investigation has been opened to clarify the events and identify the perpetrators and masterminds.
The educational community of COBAO Campus 6 expressed their dismay and grief through social media, deeply mourning the murder of teacher Fabiola Ortiz Medina. An obituary published by the teaching and administrative staff read: “The only thing death takes away is the physical; her spirit remains in our hearts.”
Family members, colleagues, and students demanded justice and clarification of the case, while expressing their outrage at the violence that continues to affect education workers in Oaxaca.
