The Oaxaca State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPCyGR) has issued a preventive alert due to the likelihood of cyclonic development in the Gulf of Tehuantepec. This meteorological phenomenon could generate moderate to heavy rains and thunderstorms in various regions of the state.

The system has a 20% chance of becoming a cyclone in the next 48 hours and a 50% chance of becoming a cyclone in the next seven days. Given this scenario, authorities urge the population to stay informed and take preventive measures, although the formation of a tropical cyclone has not yet been confirmed.

The National Meteorological Service (SMN) and the CEPCyGR are monitoring the system off the coast of the Gulf of Tehuantepec, primarily affecting the coast, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, and the Southern Sierra of Oaxaca. The phenomenon could generate occasionally heavy rains, active rivers and streams, and thunderstorms during the afternoon or evening.

The orographic effect and daytime heating are factors that can intensify rainfall in different regions of the state. Therefore, the population is advised to pay attention to official bulletins and daily forecasts issued by meteorological authorities.

Preventive Measures Recommended by the Authorities

Given the possibility of heavy rains and storms, the CEPCyGR has issued the following recommendations:

Ensure sufficient food, drinking water, and medication.
Remove objects that can be carried by wind or water, such as flowerpots, sheets, or trash.
Avoid crossing rivers, streams, or flooded areas.
Unplug electronic devices during thunderstorms and stay away from power poles and cables.
Identify temporary shelters or safe evacuation areas within the community.
Keep roofs, gutters, and blockages clean.
Follow the instructions of municipal and state authorities.

Potential Impact and Recommendations for the Public

If the cyclone materializes, the consequences could include flooding, landslides, and damage to homes and crops. For this reason, it is emphasized that the public not underestimate the phenomenon, stay informed through official channels, and take preventive precautions immediately.

Local authorities are coordinating efforts with the state government to ensure the safety of residents and minimize risks. The main recommendation is to remain calm, act early, and prepare for possible eventualities, securing basic resources and following the alerts issued by Civil Protection.
