Members of feminist organizations in Oaxaca who are part of the Marea Verde movement denounced the lack of supplies, medications, and infrastructure to guarantee safe abortions in the state’s public health centers and hospitals.
At a press conference, they stated that it is urgent to ensure that these deficiencies are resolved and to reinstate the grounds outlined in the law to avoid the limitations caused by focusing on the 12-week limit for decriminalization.
They also demanded an end to the criminalization of women within the health sector.
Public hospitals and clinics, they stated, must guarantee the medications mifepristone and misoprostol, and the adequate and comprehensive provision of legal abortions, “despite any conscientious objection that individual doctors may raise.”
“As pro-choice collectives and organizations, we face the challenge of positioning abortion as a public health issue within the health sector, which is responsible for providing care, and of positioning a narrative within society that contributes to eradicating the criminalization of women and people who have abortions and those we support, as well as the health personnel who guarantee this right.”
The members of these organizations and collectives urged federal and state authorities, the Ministries of Health, Education, Women’s Affairs, and others involved, to prioritize the allocation of earmarked budgets and comprehensive public policies, with the new decriminalization framework in the nine states of the region.
They also urged the establishment of an inter-institutional framework, “because it is clear to us that it is not yet a top priority on the State agenda, but in many cases, they use rhetoric to simulate progressive positions and guarantee rights, when in reality, they hinder the implementation of the legislation.”
