Huautla de Jiménez, in the state of Oaxaca, is an emblematic Magical Town nestled in the Mazatec Sierra, recognized as one of the main guardians of Mazatec culture, an Indigenous people that has preserved its language, customs, and identity throughout the centuries.

Thanks to the natural isolation of its mountains and deep ravines, Mazatec communities managed to preserve much of their cultural heritage despite the political and social changes that transformed other regions of the country.

In Huautla, the Mazatec language can still be heard frequently, while numerous families continue to practice ancestral traditions, festivals, music, traditional medicine, and knowledge passed down from generation to generation.

The town is also internationally known for having been the home of María Sabina, the renowned Mazatec healer who introduced the world to traditional ceremonies involving sacred mushrooms, always within the profound spiritual context of her culture.

Among its main attractions are the Cathedral of Saint John the Evangelist, the viewpoint overlooking the Mazatec Sierra, the impressive caves and natural underground chambers of the region, as well as the landscapes covered by forests and mist that characterize this area of Oaxaca.

Today, Huautla de Jiménez continues to be one of Mexico’s most important Indigenous cultural centers, where Mazatec identity remains alive through its language, gastronomy, handicrafts, and its way of understanding the world.
