Teachers from Section 22 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) occupied the Oaxaca City Airport this Friday, after leading five days of intense protests in the state and in Mexico City, where they are holding talks with the federal government this Friday.

The occupation of the airport, located in the Central Valleys region, began in the morning, an action that will continue until the negotiations with federal authorities conclude.

The pressure tactics also included the closure of Pemex facilities in the Isthmus, Sierra, and Tuxtepec regions, as well as various roadblocks at toll plazas, according to national media reports.

From Mexico City, the general secretary of CNTE Section 22, Yenny López, confirmed these actions in a video posted on social media, before meeting with the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez; the Secretary of Education, Mario Delgado; and the Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz.

“It will be up to both the federal and state governments to define the extent of our actions,” López stated, maintaining that without an agreement, the strike will be postponed until June 11, the date on which the World Cup begins in Mexico City.

López also demanded the removal and disqualification of the mayor of Villa de Mitla, Esaú López Quero, following alleged gunfire during a series of CNTE demonstrations in that town.

For its part, the Ministry of the Interior issued a statement on May 28 calling for dialogue with the teachers to prioritize “building agreements,” given the disruptions caused by the blockades in various locations, especially on the Circuito Interior, one of the capital’s main urban thoroughfares.

“We call for an end to actions that harm millions of citizens, as well as workers, students, emergency services, and economic activities that depend daily on mobility in Mexico City,” the document stated.

The talks that the CbNTE is holding with federal authorities this Friday come after teachers escalated their protests this week with simultaneous blockades and demonstrations in Mexico City and Oaxaca to increase pressure on the government just days before the start of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
