Section 22 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) announced the closure of the Inner Ring Road in Mexico City and accused all three levels of government, led by the Morena party, of promoting a strategy of repression against democratic teachers, following the attacks in Mitla, Oaxaca.

At a press conference held at the Estela de Luz monument, teachers chanted slogans such as “Damned government, repression is a crime” and “The strike is the State’s fault.”

The teachers’ leadership directly blamed the Morena governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, and the mayor of Mitla, Saúl López Quero, for the attacks allegedly carried out by shock troops against members of Section 22.

Teachers accused the state government of resorting to practices “that have historically characterized authoritarian governments,” such as the use of paramilitary groups, the criminalization of social protest, and covert repression to try to contain the teachers’ mobilizations.

According to the CNTE (National Coordinator of Education Workers), while publicly there is talk of dialogue and negotiation, in reality the authorities respond with police deployments, intimidation, and attacks against the protests. “The responsibility lies fully with all three levels of government,” the leaders stated.

Section 22 maintained that the events in Mitla strengthen the movement’s resolve to remain mobilized in defense of public education, labor rights, and the causes of the working people.
