Privatization threat to at least 3 beaches in Oaxaca

According to complaints filed by civil society groups and social organizations, at least three beaches along the Oaxaca coast are at risk of being privatized by various real estate and business projects.

They warn that, given the increase in tourist demand, large real estate chains are seeking to establish themselves in the areas of Salchi Beach in San Pedro Pochutla, El Coyote Beach in Santa María Huatulco, and El Coyul Beach in San Pedro Huamelula.

Members of the Oaxaca Organizations Front (FORO) denounced the great concern on the Oaxaca coast, where communities and residents are witnessing a systematic advance of tourism and real estate projects that seek to appropriate communal lands and restrict access to the beaches.

They pointed out that this phenomenon is not isolated, but rather part of a pattern that is repeated in different regions of the country, where political actors, companies, and groups linked to economic interests seek to privatize spaces that have historically been for collective use.

To prevent this situation, they pointed out that coastal communities maintain processes of organization and defense of their territory, demanding respect for their rights and the public and communal nature of the beaches.

They added that this same situation is occurring in several communities near Puerto Escondido, where the construction of the highway led to the sale of property to people from outside the communities; in fact, foreigners have even appropriated part of the coastal strip.

In this context, they requested that federal authorities prevent the privatization of the beaches, since the General Law of National Assets prohibits hotels or private individuals from impeding the free and recreational use of the entire coastline of the country.
