Two days after violence reignited between Santiago Yosondúa and Santa María Yolotepec, located in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca, authorities reported one person killed and another wounded by gunfire. Two people were also arrested in connection with the wave of violence.
The crossfire between residents of the two communities left two people wounded. Among them was Misael Hernández López, 35, a native of Yolotepec, who died while being transported to the medical center.
The confrontation occurred this past Saturday, November 1st. However, the burning of houses and the exchange of gunfire began last Thursday, despite the minutes of peace talks held in recent days.
Two people were arrested in connection with the events, according to the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office (FGEO). Among those arrested may be Florentino Velazco, president of the communal land council of Santa María Yolotepec, according to his wife in an interview with local media.
According to the Law to Prevent, Address, and Comprehensively Repair Internal Forced Displacement in Oaxaca, approved in early September, displacement is classified as a crime and carries prison sentences of up to 24 years for those who commit it.
Furthermore, the law stipulates that those who arbitrarily force a person or group to abandon their place of origin, territory, or habitual residence could face a prison sentence of 10 to 18 years and a fine of 1,000 to 2,000 times the Unit of Measurement and Update (UMA).
