State Surfing Championship in Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca

Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca.- With more than ten new pre-selected surfers and a forecast of moderate waves, the State Surfing Championship started this weekend on two beaches in the city with the aim of defining the next members of the state team that will participate in the 2023 CONADE Surfing Nationals, short board, boogie board and stand up paddle categories.

32 athletes from Villa de Tututepec, Santa María Tonameca, San Pedro Pochutla, San Pedro Mixtepec, Santa Maria Colotepec and Santiago Astata, have demonstrated their skills since Saturday at Punta Zicatela, where they participated on the short board and body heats, women’s branches and men’s, while on Sunday the stand up paddle races are held, long distance, both branches, from Manzanillo to Carrizalillo beach and Bahía Principal, covering circuits of 6, 9 and 12 kilometers, as well as a 200-meter spring.

Rules, points and sanctions

The organizing team made up of coaches, judges, a representative of the Oaxaca Sports Institute (INDEPORTE), as well as municipal delegates, met with the participants and some parents on two occasions to share general and technical aspects of the meeting.

Two certified judges referred to the regulations, the best scored maneuvers and highlighted the professional format of the meeting that harshly penalizes those who do not respect the “priority” system assigned to take a wave.

It was indicated that the authorities of Colotepec and Mixtepec provide the athletes with medical services, hydration and protection, in addition to the stand up paddle races, a boat will supervise the routes of the rowers.

The best of Oaxaca to the National Surfing CONADE

Although this state championship does not distribute a prize pool, the outstanding scores qualify to integrate the selective that will participate in the CONADE Surfing Nationals whose venue has not yet been defined, considering Sayulita or Mazatlán as possible candidates.

INDEPORTE, for its part, supports the participation of the Oaxacan team with transportation, lodging and food, and in case of obtaining medals, the champions will receive a stimulus of 20, 15 or 10 thousand pesos, a bonus that could experience a positive increase, according to what was said in the technical meeting held prior to Saturday’s meeting.
