Day of the Dead celebrations canceled in Oaxaca due to covid

The Ministry of Health urged the 570 municipalities to abide by the law to avoid agglomerations that could unleash the fourth wave of infections by the SARS-CoV2 virus.

The Ministry of Health of Oaxaca notified the 570 municipalities that all celebrations on the occasion of the Day of the Dead are prohibited and urged to avoid parties, ceremonies, and cultural events, in addition to not tolerating a greater concentration of people in public and municipal pantheons before a possible re-outbreak of covid-19 infections.

The head of the Ministry of Health, Juan Carlos Marquez Heine, warned that any municipal authority that violates the reformed health law in the face of the pandemic will be subject to sanctions and could be grounds for revocation of the mandate.

He said that it is proven that with greater mobility and massive concentrations, the spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus increases.

Marquez Heine affirmed that the epidemiological green traffic light should not be an opportunity to relax health prevention measures and it corresponds to all institutions to take care of the health of citizens and therefore municipal presidents were urged to assert the measures that are necessary so that the celebrations of the dead do not get out of epidemiological control and cause a fourth wave of cases due to covid-19.“Although in 

In the last weeks a decrease in the number of infections by covid-19 has been reported, the pandemic is still active and therefore it seeks to avoid a re-outbreak scenario by the end of the year, which will be possible if all the Actions to mitigate this respiratory pathology, such as the correct use of the mask, the healthy distance at all times and in all places ”, the official said.

According to the clinical cut in the state, the number of counted cases of patients infected with SARS-CoV-2 who have the disease in the active stage is 466, and even higher figure when compared to that registered on June 7, this same year, which was 154 when the third wave of infections began. 

Although the fatality in the range of 10 to 24 years is around 0.6%, it increases with age.

From 25 to 44 years the fatality is 1.5%, from 45 to 49 years it is 5.2%, from 50 to 59 years it is 11.2%, from 60 to 64 years it is 18.9% and over 65 years it is 29.1%; therefore, the greater the number of cases, the deaths increase proportionally, indicates the government entity.

The Secretary of Health clarifies that the necessary health conditions do not exist that allow the carrying out of massive acts, and in the event that the request is not fulfilled, the municipalities may incur responsibilities that will be sanctioned by the Congress of the State of Oaxaca, in the terms established by the Municipal Organic Law of the State of Oaxaca and the applicable regulations.

Meanwhile, the Oaxaca de Juárez city ​​council  suspended activities such as calendas, dinners, parades, horseback riding, bicycle races, athletic races, vehicle exhibitions, such as the Pan-American race; in order to reduce the risk of increased covid-19 infections.
