Weather will put different regions of Oaxaca to the test this Friday. The arrival and movement of tropical wave number 36 will favor rain and thunderstorms that could intensify in the Sierra Sur, Central Valleys, and Mixteca, while the eastern Isthmus of Tehuantepec is expected to be the hottest area, with temperatures potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius.
The outlook will vary by region, but the risks will be significant. In some areas, the danger will be associated with storms capable of producing lightning, strong wind gusts, and possible waterlogging or flooding; in others, prolonged exposure to high temperatures will require additional precautions to prevent heat-related effects.
Tropical wave 36, strengthened by a cyclonic circulation and an upper-level trough in the atmosphere, will continue moving westward and create favorable conditions for cloud formation and thunderstorms.
SIERRA SUR, CENTRAL VALLEYS, AND MIXTECA IN THE SPOTLIGHT
The most significant rainfall will be concentrated mainly in the Sierra Sur, Central Valleys, and Mixteca, where accumulated heat and available moisture could fuel stronger thunderstorms.
These conditions could result in intense electrical activity, showers, and wind gusts, meaning a day that begins with relatively stable skies could change rapidly.
The risk increases on rural roads and highways, where rain can reduce visibility and make driving more difficult. Authorities therefore recommend driving cautiously and avoiding crossing flooded areas.
THE ISTHMUS WITH TEMPERATURES AT THE LIMIT
While rain takes center stage in other regions, the Isthmus of Tehuantepec will face the opposite extreme.
The region could record a maximum temperature close to 35 degrees Celsius, but temperatures in the eastern part of the Isthmus could reach as high as 40 degrees Celsius.
Under these conditions, people are advised to stay consistently hydrated, wear lightweight clothing, seek shaded areas, and reduce strenuous physical activity during the hottest hours of the day.
Greater caution should be taken with children, older adults, and vulnerable individuals, who may be more affected by the heat.
