Oaxaca: Protest over the Disappearance of Roxana López, a Triqui Engineer

On May 20, 2026, three months will have passed since the disappearance of engineer Roxana López Martínez, a member of the Triqui community of San Martín Itunyoso. During a protest held in the state capital to demand that she be found alive, various organizations denounced the alarming rate of disappearances among Indigenous women in the state of Oaxaca.

“The disappearance of an Indigenous woman cannot be treated with indifference or bureaucratic delay, as every day that passes without an answer represents anguish for her family and serves as an alarming warning to all Indigenous communities throughout Oaxaca,” asserted members of the Popular Indigenous Council of Oaxaca (CIPO) while standing in front of the Government Palace.

They further highlighted the negligence of the responsible authorities—particularly the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office—in failing to locate the young woman, who has now been missing for 90 days since her disappearance on February 20, 2026.

Marisela García, a member of CIPO, stated that there has been no official response; this lack of communication is a source of deep concern for Roxana’s family members and for the social organizations “that have joined forces to ensure the engineer is found alive.”

“Roxana’s family continues to wait, and they denounce the authorities’ negligence and the State’s failure to provide a response. A month ago, a search warrant was executed at the home of the municipal mayor; yet, to this day, it remains unknown what—if anything—was found or seized during that search. The family demands immediate attention to this matter,” she explained.

Furthermore, she noted that authorities have also failed to locate the prime suspect in Roxana López’s disappearance: her ex-partner, Dagoberto López Díaz. He is the nephew of the municipality’s current mayor, Vilgaid López Guadalupe, and is currently a fugitive.

Roxana López, 24, was last seen on February 20, 2026, in San Martín Itunyoso, her hometown. Residents of the municipality have reported that the young woman was at the home of her boyfriend, Dagoberto López—a residence situated on the very same property as the home of Mayor Vilgaid López—though no further details regarding the incident have emerged to date. “It has been three months since we last heard anything from Roxana. Her family is humble and hardworking; they should not have to live in such anguish—this constitutes a violation of their human rights. Unfortunately, neither the State nor anyone else has offered them any support or guidance. We therefore urgently call for them to be provided with emotional and psychological assistance, as the absence of their daughter causes them immense pain,” stated members of CIPO, who have staged an indefinite sit-in outside the Government Palace to demand Roxana’s safe return.
