On May 5th, the Oaxaca Ministry of Economic Development unveiled the official image for the 2026 Mezcal Fair, a work by artist Shinzaburo Takeda that pays homage to the rich cultural, historical, and symbolic heritage of one of the state’s most iconic beverages.

The image, titled “Goddess of Mezcal,” is inspired by the legend of Yaa Nduva, the deity who taught how to transform the agave plant into a sacred drink, whose spirit remains in every drop. Created using watercolor on paper, it incorporates symbolic elements of the agave, fire, and the Oaxacan worldview.
