11 homicides in 72 hours; Oaxaca accounts for 10% of the country’s total.

Homicidal violence in Oaxaca shows no signs of slowing down. Between April 6 and 8, 2026, the state registered 11 intentional homicides in three days, repeatedly placing it among the states with the highest number of murders nationwide.

The data reveals a concerning trend:

April 6: Oaxaca registered 4 homicides, the same number as Chihuahua, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Morelos, and Sinaloa, placing it among the highest in the country.

April 7: The number dropped to 3 homicides, but it shared the same level as Michoacán, Morelos, Tabasco, and Veracruz, remaining in the top group.

April 8: The number rose again to 4 homicides, making it the second state with the most cases, only behind Baja California (5), and above most of the country. On April 8, Oaxaca accounted for approximately 10% of all homicides committed nationwide (4 out of 41 cases), a significant proportion that reflects its weight in the recent national violence.

Unlike other states where homicides fluctuate, Oaxaca shows a stable trend at high levels. This regularity indicates that these are not isolated incidents, but rather persistent violence that continues daily.

The total of 11 victims in 72 hours is alarming both in number and in its continuity, positioning the state as a hotspot in terms of security.

The April trend has a direct antecedent in the last week of March, a period that saw a series of homicides that foreshadowed the current situation.

During those days, Oaxaca consistently ranked among the most violent states:

March 24: 4 homicides
March 25: 4 homicides
March 26: 3 homicides
March 27: Officially 4, but at least 7 documented
March 29: 5 homicides

March 27 marked the peak. Although official figures reported four cases, journalistic accounts raised the number to seven, placing Oaxaca first in the nation that day.

The Isthmus of Tehuantepec region, particularly Juchitán, saw the most violent incidents, although the Central Valleys and the Coast have also experienced significant crime rates.

On March 27, several high-impact attacks were recorded:

In La Venta, Juchitán, a family was ambushed; their vehicle was riddled with more than 30 bullets. The father, mother, and a six-year-old girl were killed. Regarding this crime, the Oaxaca State Attorney General’s Office reported that three men were arrested for their alleged involvement in the multiple homicide.

Investigations indicate that the suspects are also linked to a criminal network involved in extortion, homicide, robbery, and other crimes. Their capture was achieved after a coordinated operation in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, where vehicles allegedly used in criminal activities were also seized.

However, new victims have publicly denounced extortion attempts, such as the case of a woman whose home was shot at on Wednesday, April 8, and who is being extorted for 250,000 pesos to be left alone.
