Beni, a mixed-breed dog who helped remove water hyacinth from the Yosocuta Dam, was poisoned in Huajuapan de León during Holy Week. Her death sparked outrage online and brought to the forefront an environmental crisis that has persisted for years without resolution.
Alfonso and Graciela rescued her as a puppy, abandoned on the shore of the same dam she would later defend. She grew up there, among the water and the fish. Over time, she learned to pull up the water hyacinth with her snout, swimming to places humans couldn’t reach, and she did it every morning. Children would come to the community work day to watch her. They would take photos and videos. She belonged to everyone.
The Lázaro Cárdenas del Río Dam, known as Yosocuta, is the main source of drinking water for Huajuapan de León and communities throughout the Mixteca region.
