The best of both worlds come together on the Oaxaca coast this December: gifts and beaches. Did you know there’s a place on the Oaxacan coast where thousands of oysters are given away to all visitors?

December is oyster month at Agua Blanca beach, a paradisiacal spot near Puerto Escondido, where the Oyster Festival is celebrated every year on December 13th and 14th.

What’s on at the Oyster Festival?

This festival is celebrated by giving away thousands upon thousands of fresh oysters to everyone who comes. This amazing seafood experience is complemented by a sport fishing competition for the largest billfish, concerts on the beach, and an incredible party atmosphere.

This event on the beach, located in Santa María Tonameca, is an opportunity to promote tourism and gastronomy on the Oaxacan coast. This way, people can appreciate the freshness and flavor of freshly harvested oysters and discover why they are so delicious in the region.

In this area, the rock oyster is especially popular. This mollusk clings to rocks, and the harvesters collect them directly from the sea to ensure their freshness and authentic flavor.

How to get from Oaxaca City to Agua Azul Beach?

It’s very quick to get by car from Oaxaca City to the community of Agua Blanca, on the coast.

The best route to save time is the Barranca Larga-Ventanilla highway, or you can also take the new Oaxaca-Puerto Escondido highway. It’s approximately 209 kilometers and will take you about 3 hours and 20 minutes.
