Yesterday afternoon, images circulated on social media of an alleged meteorite falling in the community of Zimatlán de Álvarez, a town in the Central Valleys region of Oaxaca. The photographs show a fire and a column of smoke in the distance.
According to the reports circulating, there was anxiety among the population, and it was even claimed that after the meteorite hit, a slight earthquake was felt in various nearby municipalities.
Others, meanwhile, took advantage of the occasion to create mocking memes about an alleged alien invasion in Oaxaca.
These reports, however, were denied. The state government’s Secretariat of Public Security and Citizen Protection stated that the claim of a meteorite falling in Zimatlán de Álvarez was false.
It also asserted that the fire and column of smoke seen in the photographs were the result of a garbage dump fire, which was already being addressed by the relevant authorities.
He reported that the cause of the loud noise heard by the population is being investigated, which likely led to the rumor that a meteorite had fallen.
“The State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management is investigating the loud noise reported by the public in the same area. So far, no impact on the population or material damage has been reported in the area.”
