Residents of the community of Pascual Fuentes or El Jícaro, part of the municipality of Santo Domingo Zanatepec, blocked the Pan-American Highway to demand that municipal authorities release two pigs detained this morning.

The two animals were captured by municipal police following orders from the Zanatepec mayor, who responded to complaints from several residents of El Jícaro about the pigs, which were running loose in the community, damaging and littering their yards.

After learning of the capture of both pigs and their transfer to the municipal slaughterhouse, the residents of Pascual Fuentes immediately mobilized in support of the pigs’ owner and blocked the roadway with logs, vehicle tires, and branches.

According to authorities, the roadblock began at 11:40 a.m. this Friday, at kilometer 79 of Pan-American Highway 190. The protest continued until 1:00 p.m. while authorities spoke with the owner of the pigs.

It should be noted that the roadblock near El Jícaro suspended vehicle traffic to the eastern Oaxacan municipalities of San Pedro Tapanatepec and Chahuites, as well as to the coastal towns of Chiapas.
