The State Coordination of Civil Protection and Risk Management (CEPCyGR) issued an official warning regarding the arrival of a swell phenomenon that will impact the coastal area of Oaxaca. This natural event will primarily affect the area from San Mateo del Mar to Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, with greater intensity in areas of the Gulf of Tehuantepec.
According to data from the Ministry of the Navy (Semar), the phenomenon will cause high waves that could reach between 6 and 8 feet in height, with a return period of 18 to 20 seconds. This will generate rough sea conditions, posing significant risks to those engaged in recreational, maritime, or commercial activities along the beach.
When does the swell begin in Oaxaca?
According to the state Civil Protection agency, the event will begin on the afternoon of this Friday, May 2, 2025, and its effects are expected to continue for the following days. High waves could affect the safety of swimmers, fishermen, small boats, and tourism service providers, so precautions are recommended.
Authorities point out that swells are common at certain times of the year, but they can also involve strong currents and sudden rises in sea level, which pose a danger in areas with high tourism and fishing activity.
