With the aim of raising awareness among the new generations about the care and respect for iguanas, environmentalists from the Juchiteco Ecological Forum, in coordination with students from the “Daniel C. Pineda” primary school in the municipality of Juchitán, released 10 black iguanas in the “Benito Juárez” park, so that they can reproduce freely and thus recover the population of this species, which has been threatened by its consumption for more than 15 years.

This was explained to MILENIO by Eduardo Noriega, a biologist from the Juchiteco Ecological Forum, who pointed out that actions like this will allow raising awareness among girls, boys and young people. “And we no longer have iguanas, the iguanas that were in the river many years ago, that were in some places near the city, have already disappeared, especially the black species that is native to here and this is what we are trying to do today, try to raise awareness, we released ten iguanas, both the black species (Ctenosaura pectinata), and the green species.”

The students had the opportunity to see iguanas of these species up close, surprised they joined in the release, and then saw how they climbed the trees and got lost among the branches, an experience that will be shared in the classrooms, Yadira Guadalupe Blas Gacaía, a teacher at this educational institution, told Milenio that they have participated for 10 years in this activity, allowing several generations to sow the seed of environmental education.

“We have had this project for the environment for many years, about ten years, and this is very useful for them, because it is better to see it, experience it, and later we will analyze it and work on it in class.”
