In view of the celebration of the Day of the Dead, we tell you more about the “Muerteadas”, which are one of the festivals that take place in Oaxaca, to honor the deceased.

It should be noted that this celebration takes place in the entity of Villa de Etla, one of the 570 municipalities that the state has.

These celebrations take place every November 1, although since the month of October the population prepares to carry out these activities.

According to information published by the Government of the State of Oaxaca, the ‘Muerteada’ is a theatrical representation, in which a person who has died, comes back to life with the help of priests, doctors and spiritualists.

Therefore, several people belonging to the population are chosen to play the main roles in this play, which takes place in the streets of Villa de Etla, every year, on the occasion of the Day of the Dead. These events last more than 20 hours, and attendees always wear black.

It is worth mentioning that in different parts of that state celebrations of all kinds take place on the occasion of the Day of the Dead. In the capital, there are parades, which are similar to the ‘Muerteadas’, with the difference that there is no representation of a story, but all attendees dress up as characters that allude to the celebration.
