The Guelaguetza is a dance and music festival that has been celebrated for ninety-two years, created in 1932 in Oaxaca, Mexico, to celebrate the cultural diversity of the state and show the artistic expressions of its eight regions. The term “Guelaguetza” is of pre-Hispanic origin and reflects the cooperation between communities, an activity rooted in ancestral practices of mutual aid and offerings to agricultural deities.
It is a show that shows the traditions, customs and rituals of the towns and communities of the state. It has its origins in pre-Hispanic times when Centéotl, the goddess of corn, was celebrated on the two Mondays after July 16 and is also part of the cults to the Virgin of Carmen.
This festival is a symbol of identity for the people of Oaxaca. With enthusiasm, joy and a spirit of solidarity, each community shares its heritage and cultural diversity through clothing, music and gastronomy.
The Chinas Oaxaqueñas of Valles Centrales announce the beginning of the celebration; San José Tenango arrives to share the solemnity with its Mazatec sounds; San Melchor Betaza delights with sones and jarabes; while Santo Domingo Tehuantepec unites dance and tradition in the Vela Sandunga; Pinotepa Nacional fills the stage with mischief with chilenas and sones; and San Juan Bautista Tuxtepec celebrates the pineapple harvest with its renowned Flor de piña.
