Social media users have reported that since last Monday there have been cases of mass poisoning of dogs and cats in Etlatongo and Asunción Nochixtlán, communities in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca.

According to the report, it is about the discovery in Etlatongo of more than a dozen dead dogs and cats, presumably due to poisoning, which alerted citizens and organizations dedicated to animal protection.

Faced with this, residents demand that the municipal president, Álvaro Rodríguez, investigate and sanction those responsible.

Poisoning of animals raises alarms in the Mixteca region of Oaxaca

This discovery was followed by a similar one on Tuesday, after 15 more dogs appeared dead in the Emiliano Zapata neighborhood of Asunción Nochixtlán; therefore, residents also demanded the intervention of the municipal president Alfredo Feliciano López Santiago.

“We are completely alarmed by this situation, we invite all citizens to file a complaint with the health department and the public prosecutor. If you know who it was, do not remain silent. Remember that we are behind all of you to support you. It is not possible that in the middle of the patron saint’s day, these types of acts are happening. The solution is not to kill them in such a cruel way, but to sterilize them to combat overpopulation,” said the Milagros Foundation, established in Nochixtlán.

The association called on the residents to demonstrate today at 4:00 p.m. at the municipal palace of Nochixtlán.

The law in force since May 2015 establishes in article 414 that in Oaxaca: “Anyone who wilfully deprives a vertebrate animal of its life will be punished with imprisonment from six months to four years and a fine of 500 to 1,500 days’ salary.”
