The local deputy of the National Regeneration Movement Party (Morena), César Mateos Benítez, seeks that in Oaxaca the Oxxo stores that are located near schools from preschool to higher education be closed.

Through an exhortation, the deputy asked the 570 municipalities to sanction or close the Oxxo stores that are in the vicinity of any public or private school.

He assured that this request is due to the fact that the operation of these stores “is a flagrant violation of the Education Law and the General Law of Adequate and Sustainable Food.” And, he added, it threatens the health of girls, boys and adolescents in the state of Oaxaca.

“Let us take into account that 26% of deaths from non-communicable diseases in Mexico are related to the consumption of processed, ultra-processed products, alcohol and tobacco,” he said in his argument.

For this reason, he asked not to allow the large transnational companies of the food industry to “appropriate” the health of girls and boys.

The legislator recalled that in April of last year he carried out a symbolic closure of an Oxxo store for selling “junk” food to minors.

“My request or my proposal could be a bit exaggerated, but let’s not forget that here we have raised for many months in these two years of Legislature all the damage they have caused to children, we cried out to heaven for Covid of how many deaths had to happen precisely due to cardiovascular diseases and among them diabetes,” he said.
