On July 17, the community of Lázaro Cárdenas, belonging to the municipality of San Miguel el Grande, in Oaxaca, was attacked by armed men who burned houses and set fire to the Yukunino forest.
The Oaxacan filmmaker Ángeles Cruz called for help to the state and federal authorities; however, the response never came, so she held a protest at the Guelaguetza.
In the middle of the festival, she raised her fist to demand an audience with the governor, Salomón Jara. However, they sent a group of women who tried to make the request for help invisible.
The reporters who captured the moment were attacked and threatened with being expelled from the Cerro del Fortín auditorium if they continued to spread Ángeles Cruz’s request.
“Obviously, I am surrounded by people who are watching me, we are demonstrating to try to see the governor and get an urgent appointment to resolve the issue of attacks that the people of San Miguel El Grande have suffered,” she said.
The actress also in a video on Instagram called out the government for not acting and accused the Oaxaca justice prosecutor’s office of not having enforced the arrest warrants against those responsible for several murders during 2023, despite the presence of the National Guard.
“The community was supposed to be guarded by the National Guard and yet these cowardly people came in to burn down the houses, to burn down our hill and we are still waiting for concrete actions to bring the murderers to jail, what are they waiting for, are they waiting for us to be killed too?” she claimed.
