Australian tourist disappears on Oaxaca beaches; two days of searching

After two days of being missing, the search for a 16-year-old boy of Australian origin who disappeared after being dragged by the sea on the beach of San Agustinillo, in the municipality of Santa María Tonameca, in the Costa del Sol region in Oaxaca, continues.

The events occurred on Thursday, March 2, in the afternoon, when the minor went swimming and a wave took him in to sea.

According to the Civil Protection of Santa María Tonameca, since the incident became known, a search protocol was activated in the beach area, in which elements of the Civil Protection Directorate and the Tourism Board participate.

Lifeguards from Puerto Ángel and Playa Zipolite also helped with jet skis and some fishermen, divers and service providers who made tours with their boats, without being located so far.

Geovani Ríos Ramírez, head of Civil Protection, mentioned that according to testimonies from service providers, the young man was advised not to enter the sea, “but sometimes we are overconfident and unfortunately these things happen, first of all let’s wait for God that the body show up and hand it over to the family.

In a statement, the municipal president, César Ruíz Gutiérrez, said that this is an unfortunate situation and reported that, through the Municipal Directorate of Civil Protection, fuel support is being channeled for the boats that help in locating tasks, and rescue the foreign tourist.
