Oaxaca seeks to “seduce” national and international cruise ships to boost tourism in Huatulco

According to official data, in the last year 30 cruise ships arrived in Bahías de Huatulco from national and international ports.

Oaxaca de Juárez.— As a way of promoting economic development and tourism in the Oaxaca Coast region, the state government reported that it “is working to establish strategies to encourage cruise tourism, and improve the conditions to receive national and international vessels that allow the arrival of visitors to the entity”.

The foregoing was stated by Saymi Pineda Velasco, head of the Ministry of Tourism ( Sectur Oaxaca ), who assured that this seeks to comply with the strategic axes of public policies for the Construction of the Bases for the Integral and Sustainable Development of the eight Regions of Oaxaca, in terms of economic and tourist development promoted by the administration of Salomón Jara. 

In addition, it intends to “make effective” the proposals of the working meeting held between Jara Cruz and the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism ( Fonatur ), to request the review of investment projects for the maintenance of port facilities.

The head of Sectur said that the arrival of cruise ships “is of the utmost importance for tourist activity and, therefore, for the economic benefits of the region.”

According to official data, in the last year 30 cruise ships arrived in Bahías de Huatulco from national ports such as Cabo San Lucas, Vallarta and Manzanillo; as well as Quetzal, Guatemala and among others. These arrivals brought together a total of 37,135 passengers, with an estimated economic benefit of 44,594,867 pesos, equivalent to 2,228,100 dollars. 

Each of these vessels transports an average of 1,238 passengers on board and each cruise remains in the destination for an average of 8 to 9 hours, “time that tourists spend visiting the town’s handicraft market, taking tours to know the natural attractions and the consumption of local gastronomy, indicated the dependency in a statement. 

Among the vessels that arrived in Huatulco, the Casta’s main tourist destination, are Carnival Spirit, Celebrity Millenium, Scenic Eclipse, Serenade of de Seas, Ocean Victory, Nieuw Amsterdam, Eurodam, Norwegian Sun, Serenade of The Seas, Diamond Princess, Ruby Princess, Emerald Princess, among others.
