The destination has implemented tools for visitors to find activities that generate a genuine connection with nature.

In March of last year, Huatulco received the EarthCheck certification, from the World Tourism Organization, which measures the level of sustainability in destinations. This is how he became the second in the world and first in America with this recognition.

Experts assure that when embarking on a sustainable trip, it is important to choose a lodging that contributes actions in favor of the environment, with a wide range of activities that care for and protect it, in pursuit of betting on the fight against climate change.

One of the main attractions between Puerto Escondido and Huatulco is the La Escobilla Sanctuary, one of the most important natural protected areas in the world for the survival of the olive ridley turtle.

Being the only place in the region dedicated to the conservation of sea turtles, more than 2 million turtles nest here from June to February.

In monitoring the conservation of the environment, Huatulco has implemented multiple actions. For example, in early August, the second plastic fishing tournament was held, in which 137 people participated aboard 97 kayaks and collected more than 1.5 tons of waste thrown on the beaches of Santa María Huatulco.

Sustainable tourism, more relevant now than before the pandemic

According to the Barometer of the Tourism Organization (UNWTO), international tourism will continue its recovery this year.

As the summer holidays approach, different organizations hope that international tourism will continue its course of recovery. It is in this sense that, according to an investigation by iStock, revealed that today more travelers prefer eco-friendly experiences to reduce the impact on the environment.

“Ecotourism and green tourism are a growing priority for Latin Americans when traveling. 40% revealed that sustainable tourism is more important now than before the pandemic.

Tristen Norman, director of Creative Insights for the Americas, highlighted that Latin America is “at the forefront when it comes to ecotourism and sustainable development in the travel industry, particularly because the region is rich in natural attractions that need protection.

In this regard, he warned that, according to the research carried out, 67% of people consider that it is important that travel brands demonstrate their commitment to the environment.

The document indicates that although Latin America is considered a global access point for this type of travel, little is said about the fact that the main consumers are local. An Expedia investigation revealed that more than 75% of Mexicans, 69% of Brazilians and 50% of Argentines travel within their own country.
