New Hydrocarbon Spill Reported on Beaches in Oaxaca
Authorities in the state of Oaxaca announced that a new hydrocarbon spill has been detected on beaches in the municipality of Salina Cruz. In response, cleanup operations have already begun to help protect the coastal environment.
New Hydrocarbon Spill on Oaxaca’s Beaches
The Municipal Government of Salina Cruz announced through its official social media channels, including its Facebook page, that a new hydrocarbon spill was reported on Tuesday, July 28.
According to local authorities, the affected beaches in the Salinas del Marqués area are:
- Punta Conejo
- Playa Brasil
- Playa Azul
Cleanup Operations Underway
The Salina Cruz municipal government reported that, during the meeting of the Local Coordination Committee of the National Contingency Plan for Hydrocarbon and Potentially Hazardous Substance Spills, convened by the Mexican Navy (Secretariat of the Navy), officials agreed that addressing the new spill along the municipality’s coastline would be the top priority.
As a result, on Wednesday, July 29, at 2:00 p.m., cleanup efforts began on the beaches of Salinas del Marqués, Punta Conejo, Playa Brasil, and Playa Azul, with the coordinated participation of agencies from all three levels of government.
According to the municipal government:
“In coordination with authorities from the three levels of government, the municipal departments of Ecology, Civil Protection, and the Municipal Police immediately joined the response efforts. As part of the strategy established by the committee, the Municipal Government was assigned responsibility for cleanup operations at Playa Brasil, contributing to the restoration of the affected areas and the protection of the coastal ecosystem.”
