A magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck Oaxaca in the early hours of Friday, September 5, according to the National Seismological Service.

According to estimates, the earthquake, for which no seismic or cell phone alerts were activated, occurred just 4 kilometers south of San Pedro, Pochutla, Oaxaca, at a depth of 9 kilometers.

Due to its proximity to land, authorities initially estimated the magnitude of the earthquake in Mexico at 5.1; however, after correcting the magnitude, they estimated it to be lower.

Although it did not exceed magnitude 5, earthquake monitoring applications reported that the magnitude was moderate.

SkyAlert stated that the magnitude was moderate in the epicenter area, and that the earthquake was felt slightly in Mexico City.

Authorities have not reported any damage or injuries so far.

The National Civil Protection Coordination reported that no damage or injuries have been reported following the earthquake, especially in Oaxaca and surrounding states. Mexico City did not report any inspections to confirm damage.

The Oaxaca government also did not comment after the earthquake, so it is unknown whether units were deployed to inspect for possible damage.

The earthquake occurred in the first days of September, a month in which Mexico has experienced two of its most damaging earthquakes. These earthquakes occurred on September 19, 1985, and 2017, respectively, leaving multiple deaths and damage to buildings in several states.

Although magnitude 4 earthquakes occur every day, the shallow depth and the epicenter being close to the ground were factors that made the earthquake felt not only in Oaxaca but also in Mexico City, according to citizen reports compiled by SkyAlert, an earthquake warning platform.
