The National Meteorological Service (SMN) reported that the probability of a low-pressure zone forming off the southern coast of Oaxaca and Chiapas evolving into a tropical storm has increased to 70%.
On its social media, the National Water Commission (Conagua) estimated that the zone will form early next week, and is therefore monitoring it.
In the next seven days, the phenomenon could become a cyclone, according to current forecasts.
Last Thursday, Hurricane Erick made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in Guerrero and Oaxaca, before weakening to a tropical storm.
Two people died in Oaxaca during its path, and damage was extensive. On Saturday, Oaxaca Civil Protection confirmed the death of 35-year-old Juan Carlos López Solórzano, whose body was found in the Lagunas de Chacahua area.
The first death related—albeit indirectly—to the impact of Hurricane Erick occurred early Friday morning, when a man received an electric shock while attempting to remove a power line.
Hurricane Erick made landfall in the municipality of Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, with wind gusts of over 250 kilometers per hour, leaving damage in more than 34 municipalities.
The Secretariat of the Navy, through the Mexican Navy, set up various collection centers in Mexico City so that citizens can bring supplies that will be delivered to those affected in Oaxaca and Guerrero after the impact of Hurricane Erick, now downgraded to a low pressure zone.
