Strike in seven hospitals and 180 clinics in Oaxaca due to lack of supplies and personnel

This Tuesday, health sector workers began a work stoppage and are keeping seven hospitals and 180 clinics closed in the Isthmus region of Oaxaca.

Members of Subsection 02 of Section 35 of the Ministry of Health Workers’ Union declared a Permanent Assembly, which means the closure of the Health Jurisdiction facilities based in Juchitán, as well as all hospitals and clinics in the Isthmus.

What are the workers demanding?

The workers are denouncing the lack of supplies, medications, equipment, and medical personnel in hospitals and clinics, a problem they say they have faced since the transition of Health Services to IMSS Bienestar.

They are demanding, among other things, the dismissal of the Director of Administration of Health Services of Oaxaca, Alejo Esaú Ramírez, as well as the dismissal of all hospital unit directors in the region.

Due to the closure of hospitals and clinics, only emergency services are being provided.

“All units are in very bad condition, in a truly extreme state of deterioration, one could say. We don’t have the basic necessities, we don’t have supplies, we don’t have medications, we don’t have medical supplies, we no longer have laboratory services. Our unit doesn’t have an autoclave, which has resulted, for more than three or four months now, in many surgeries having to be postponed…” said Carlos León Díaz, union representative at the Juchitán General Hospital.
