Oaxaca municipal police go on strike: they accuse the mayor of handing over security to the state

A new police protest broke out in this entity, now in the municipality of San Raymundo Jalpan, located 14 kilometers from the city of Oaxaca, in the Valles Centrales region, where municipal police began a work stoppage in protest of the “abusive and arrogant” attitude of the municipal president, Pablo Mendoza, whom they accused of trying to replace them and hand over security to the State Police.

The uniformed officers gathered this Wednesday on the esplanade in front of the municipal palace where they placed a municipal patrol car and a City Hall truck to which they pasted banners that read: “Work stoppage”, “We demand dignified and respectful treatment”, “The municipal palace is not a canteen for the councilwomen”, among other phrases.

The protesters denounced the mayor’s intention to eliminate the corporation and hand over security to the State Police, which they considered to be a unilateral measure because the police institution was created by the population and not by a municipal administration.

They demanded the immediate intervention of the state authority to mediate in the conflict so that it does not continue to grow, because otherwise they threatened to move their protest to the Government Palace in the capital so that they can be attended to by the Secretary of Government.

They also denounced that the members of the Council consume alcoholic beverages inside the palace, which is also a violation of the normative system. “Both the mayor and the councilors of the city council use the municipal palace as a canteen, they accused.

“The dissatisfaction is because we have not had uniforms. The gentleman (Pablo Mendoza) arrives drunk, he is constantly getting drunk with the councilor and he uses the municipality as a canteen,” they insisted.

“He wants to remove us from office by state police and it does not seem fair to us, he will be drunk until he (the mayor) gives us the respect that we deserve” and they warned that they will remain in protest until what they consider a campaign of harassment against them ceases.

Last week, elements of the State Police of the Secretariat of Security and Citizen Protection of the Government of Oaxaca began a work stoppage, after at least 200 police officers were notified of their dismissal on the grounds that they did not pass the confidence control exam.

After the protest that spread throughout all regions of the state and lasted for two days, Francisco Santiago García took office as the new Commissioner of the State Police and Gilberto Ángel Hernández Villarreal as Chief of Staff of the corporation.
