The recent discovery of the bodies of nine students from Tlaxcala in Oaxaca has shocked the nation and highlighted the ongoing violence in Mexico. The students, who had been reported missing since February 27, 2025, were found dead on March 2, 2025, near the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway in the municipality of San José Miahuatlán.

The victims, identified as five men and four women, were traveling to the beaches of Oaxaca for a vacation when they disappeared. Their bodies were discovered by the National Guard during a routine patrol. The authorities found a dark gray Volkswagen Vento with Tlaxcala license plates, abandoned on the side of the road. Inside the vehicle, they discovered bags containing human remains, and nearby, a blood-stained tarp covering several bodies.

The initial investigation revealed that the victims had been subjected to extreme violence, including gunshot wounds and signs of torture. Among the victims, two were identified as Leslye and Angie Lizet, based on identification documents found at the scene. The authorities are working to confirm the identities of the remaining victims through forensic tests.

The State Attorney General’s Office of Puebla has taken over the investigation, collaborating with authorities from Tlaxcala and Oaxaca to determine the motive behind the crime. One of the main lines of investigation points to a possible connection with organized crime, given the level of violence involved.

The news of the students’ deaths has caused an outpouring of grief and anger in Tlaxcala, where families and friends had been actively searching for them. The incident has also raised concerns about the safety of travelers on the Cuacnopalan-Oaxaca highway, which has a history of assaults and disappearances.

As the investigation continues, the families of the victims are demanding justice and answers for the brutal murder of their loved ones. The tragic event underscores the urgent need for effective measures to combat violence and ensure the safety of citizens in Mexico.
