Section 22 of the National Coordinator of Education Workers (CNTE) reported that a 48-hour strike will be held next Thursday, February 27 and Friday, February 28, in the state of Oaxaca.

CNTE school strike will be divided into two blocks
According to the official statement, the CNTE protests will take place at two strategic points. In Mexico City, 50% of the union members plan to take over the Congress of the Union as a pressure measure so that their demands are heard by the Legislative Branch.

Meanwhile, in the state of Oaxaca, the other 50% of the membership will participate in the seizure of toll booths and the occupation of federal agency offices.

This strategy seeks to make their discontent visible both locally and nationally and, at the same time, interrupt government and mobility activities to draw the attention of the authorities.

CNTE Oaxaca teachers pause mobilization

Before 1:00 p.m., teachers from Section 22 of the CNTE, belonging to the General Directorate of Education of Indigenous Peoples, concluded their day of mobilizations in the capital of Oaxaca and removed the sit-in they had set up in front of the Government Palace.

Despite the announced strike, after midday, they decided to pause the mobilizations, since their requests were met, including the regularization of the labor of more than 3 thousand teachers.

Although the previous day the teachers blocked various points of the city, this Tuesday they only remained waiting for a satisfactory response to their demands for labor regularization.

What are the CNTE teachers in Oaxaca demanding?

The Oaxacan teachers have stated that their struggle is based on various demands that they consider essential for education and labor rights. These include:

Repeal of the ISSSTE Law of 2007, as well as the total rejection of any reform that affects its retirement conditions and benefits
Cancellation of the forums organized by the SEP for the creation of a new educational system
Delivery of uniforms and school supplies remains a priority
Labor regularization of more than 3 thousand teachers.

In addition, they have expressed their opposition to the plundering of the cultural heritage and natural resources of the indigenous peoples, denouncing the implementation of extractive megaprojects that they consider a threat to their communities.

Finally, they reiterate their demand that the Plan for the Transformation of Education in Oaxaca (PTEO) be approved in the State Education Law, in order to guarantee an educational model that respects the identity and needs of the state.
