Simón, the Presidential Turkey That AMLO Received in Oaxaca, Has Died An Unusual But Significant News Was Released: The Death Of Simon The Turkey That Former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) Received As A Gift During A Visit To Miahuatlán De Porfirio Díaz, Oaxaca, Three Years Ago.

A piece of unusual but significant news was released: the death of Simon the turkey that former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) received as a gift during a visit to Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, Oaxaca, three years ago.

The bird known as the “presidential turkey,” was given to AMLO by a woman as a sign of affection while the then-president greeted citizens during a tour of the streets of the municipality. At the same meeting, he also received a handcrafted mezcal, a gesture that symbolized the appreciation of the Oaxacan people.

After he arrived at the National Palace, Simón was the subject of media attention, especially when animal rights activists requested Simon to be spared from the Christmas table. In response, the turkey obtained a “presidential pardon” and was sent to the Sicarú sanctuary, where he lived in protected conditions until his natural death on November 25.

The news of his death was commented on with humor at the morning conference this Friday, where President Claudia Sheinbaum recalled the anecdote with laughter. However, social media reacted with divided opinions: some users jokingly suggested that Simón be donated for Christmas dinner while others advocated respecting his memory.

It was not only an anecdotal symbol of AMLO’s tours around the country, but also a representation of the connection between the former president and Mexican traditions such as turkey breeding, which is an essential part of rural customs.
