The government of Oaxaca will impose these penalties on those who alter the conditions of public service provision.
The Secretary of Mobility of Oaxaca, Claudina De Gyves, has informed that transporters who operate off-route or transport migrants jeopardize passenger safety. The fines could reach up to 32,000 pesos, and the offenders may face suspension of their concession and license cancellation.
Additionally, private vehicles used for transporting migrants have also been detected, and measures will be taken to prevent such unauthorized transportation.
In the Istmo de Tehuantepec region of Oaxaca, hundreds of people from different countries walk along Highway 190 daily, relying on public transportation for their journeys.
In October 2023, at least 16 migrants from Haiti and Venezuela died while traveling on public buses due to a mechanical failure. Several others were injured.
Recently, Central American migrants broke through the police cordon set up by the National Guard to advance toward Juchitán de Zaragoza. Despite the National Guard’s protective gear, the migrants managed to push forward.
