Abigail Mendoza, traditional cook from Oaxaca, obtains the National Prize for Arts and Literature
Oaxaca de Juárez.- The traditional Zapotec cook Abigail Mendoza Ruiz was the winner of the 2022 National Prize for Arts and Literature (PNAL), announced the Ministry of Culture of the federal government.
Culture explains that this recognition is granted to those who, through their creations, productions or teaching, research or dissemination work, have contributed to enriching the country’s cultural heritage or the progress of Linguistics, Literature, Fine Arts, History, Sciences social, Philosophy, and popular Arts and Traditions, as well as artistic expressions in general.
The native of Teotitlán del Valle, a community in the central region of Oaxaca, was awarded in the field of Popular Arts and Traditions, for being the bearer and transmitter of knowledge and traditions of biocultural heritage. The above, indicating her dependence, is manifested through her cooking, in daily, ceremonial and ritual life that strengthens the Zapotec identity of her community in Oaxaca, which projects the cultural wealth of Mexico in the world. .
In addition to the Oaxacan, in the field of Linguistics and Literature, the translator Selma Ancira Berny is recognized for having enriched the literary reading universe with splendid translations from Russian and Greek that are now part of the cultural capital of Mexico.
Regarding the field of Fine Arts, the award is granted to María de Lourdes Rojo e Incháustegui, for her extensive and outstanding career for more than 60 years in national theater and television; She, in addition to being an international reference in Mexican cinema. She also highlights her social and political commitment to elevating culture to be considered a human right.
On the other hand, in History, Social Sciences and Philosophy, Antonio Rubial García is recognized for his academic career and his dissemination of knowledge that has impacted the formation of a national identity, the result of the intercultural encounter between Mexico and Spain. Also for his extensive written production and the distinctions awarded by national and foreign institutions.
The National Prize for Arts and Literature is awarded by the Government of Mexico, through the federal Ministry of Culture, and reaffirms the commitment to promote and disseminate the work of the country’s artists, researchers.
The award ceremony will be held on November 9, 2023 at the Palace of Fine Arts at 12:00 p.m.
