Citizens of Puerto Escondido, on the coast of the state, protest in the vicinity of Bacocho Beach to demand that the works of the large-scale real estate project Oxean, developed by Own México, be stopped.
“We want to express our concern about the construction plans of the ambitious and lucrative project of 80 apartments on Bacocho beach, which is currently certified,” says Krystal Chávez, who started a petition on Change.org addressed to Governor Alejandro Murat, who It already has more than 55 thousand signatures.
“This beach has achieved its certification thanks to many cleaning and care efforts over the last few years. Which brought an enormous positive consequence, achieving that this beach recovers the habitat of four different species of sea turtles, which year after year continue to arrive at this home and spawn, causing groups to be created that protect them and help to safeguard their nests on this beach”, he mentions.
In the petition also addressed to Javier Cruz Jiménez, municipal president of San Pedro Mixtepec, it is argued that the lights on in the apartments would drive away the turtles from the beach, as well as the congestion of people and the presence of ATVs, which would pass over of the nests.
In addition, they affirm that the project is not duly evaluated in favor of sustainable urban development, “nor does it consider the environmental impact that it will leave on the turtle camp that is next to the land where they are starting to dig.”
In a statement from Own, disseminated on the social networks of Bayside Real Estate Puerto Escondido, which promotes the sale of the apartments, the developer states that it has environmental impact studies, environmental permits, as well as permits granted by the Development Directorate Urban and Public Works of San Pedro Mixtepec.
“One of the most important points to consider on the land was the lack of delicate or protected vegetation or wildlife, and not being close to any ecosystem,” says the real estate agency in its positioning.
In addition, he points out that they made the decision to build their own wastewater treatment plant within the complex, “so as not to increase the volume that municipal drainage already receives.”
He assures that it was the BIOGEOMÁTICA consulting company, established in the city of Oaxaca, that was in charge of making a diagnostic analysis of the land and its surroundings, “prior to the management of environmental permits.”
The project, located on land that is part of the Puerto Escondido Trust of the National Fund for the Promotion of Tourism (Fonatur), was expropriated in 1970 by the government of Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, will last two years, according to the developer.
In the sales advertisement, written in English and with prices in dollars, it is highlighted that the 80 apartments and villas have ocean views, ranging from 1 to 3 rooms, and promise “exclusivity and privacy”, from 5 million pesos.

Unfortunately, this project, although politically approved, has not been properly evaluated in favor of sustainable urban development, nor does it consider the environmental impact that it will leave on the turtle camp that is next to the land where they are starting an excavation.
