At least 102 activists have been murdered so far in Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s six-year term, the most recent case being that of activist Patricia Rivera Reyes on March 19 in Tijuana, Baja California, reported the organization Educa Oaxaca.

According to Educa, Rivera is the fifth defender killed so far this year in Mexico. The other activists are Ximena García, defender of the LGBT+ community; Ana Luisa Garduño Juárez, an activist who sought justice for the femicide of her daughter in Morelos; Francisco Vázquez, opponent of the Morelos Comprehensive Project in Ayala; and the Rarámuri defender José Trinidad Baldenegro.

The count data, Educa explained, correspond to activists claimed by a social or human rights organization, and added that “the State of Oaxaca leads the sad list, with 22 defenders murdered” under AMLO administration.

In addition to the murders, an increase in the disappearances of activists and defenders has been reported in the country, one of the most recent cases being that of the mother seeker Angélica Janet Armenta Quintero in Cajeme, Sonora, since March 10. In addition, March 26 will mark one year since the forced disappearance of defenders Claudia Uruchurtu in Nochixtlán, Oaxaca, and Grisell Pérez Rivera, in the State of Mexico.

The increase in the disappearance and murder of human rights defenders, environmentalists, and journalists has turned Mexico into one of the most dangerous countries to exercise activism and communication, without the authorities intervening to guarantee their safety and prevent the cases from becoming in impunity.
