AFTER RELAXATION OF MEASURES, THE MUNICIPALITY OF OAXACA GOES FROM ZERO TO 5 CASES OF COVID-19
When the federal government announced that “municipalities of hope”, without COVID-19 infections, they could resume some activities, residents of Miahuatlán relaxed their measures of healthy distance
After Miahuatlán, Oaxaca, relaxed the healthy distance measures since May 15, this municipality went from zero to 5 cases of COVID-19.
One of the first confirmed infections on the site was that of a 40-year-old woman on May 15, who registered shortly before some economic activities were opened and sanitary measures were ignored.
Days before the first case was confirmed, the locals took to the streets without any protection measure, such as face masks, and also did not keep the ‘healthy distance’.
The transition from zero to 5 cases happened after the federal government announced that municipalities without infections, which were also together with other municipalities without positive cases, could resume their activities on Monday, May 18.
According to the mayor of Miahuatlán, Genaro Hernández, this behavior, and the announcement of the measure, increased the risk of the virus spreading.
Miahuatlán de Porfirio Díaz, was one of the first Oaxacan municipalities in which the hygiene and healthy distance measures dictated by the country’s health authorities were followed.
Since the beginning of March, the population of this municipality was called to abide by the measures, only to go to the essentials, always taking care to keep the healthy distance, in addition to the suspension of the street market every Monday and the streets were sanitized.
When the Government announced that residents of the so-called “municipalities of hope”, places where there were no infections, could go out and resume their activities, the confirmation of the first cases of COVID-19 began in Miahuatlán.
Hernández said he was concerned, during an interview with Animal Político, about this situation because in the event that the cases are shot the local health system could collapse.
The municipality only has four medical units, to serve 41 thousand visitors. One of these health centers, belonging to the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) serves 32 nearby towns.
For this reason, patients with severe COVID-19 symptoms should be transferred to the city of Oaxaca, which is located 100 kilometers away, as it is the closest point where seven units are located to exclusively care for patients due to this virus.
