The megaprojects continue to advance throughout the country, in addition to the Mayan Train, another of the federal government’s commitments is the interoceanic corridor of Mexico in the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, an infrastructure that will connect the Pacific Ocean with the Gulf of Mexico, anchoring two important ports for the country: Salina Cruz in Oaxaca and Coatzacoalcos in Veracruz.
The project, in which 20,000 million pesos have already been invested, will be a direct communication vehicle between the Pacific and the Atlantic, and it is expected to be an economic corridor that will boost the economy and development of Mexico, since it is looming, it will be much faster and cheaper than the Panama Canal.
The Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec will cover a strip of 303 kilometers and will be equipped to make it a first-class industrial corridor, along its entire perimeter there will be two high-altitude ports, railways, highways, three airports (Minatitlán, Ixtepec and Huatulco), a gas pipeline and a fiber optic network.
According to the authorities in charge, it is estimated that, once it enters into operation, it will transport 1.4 million containers per year in a journey of less than 6 hours, so that this industrial space will become, together with the Panama Canal and the Suez Canal, in Egypt, in one of the most important oceanic corridors in the world, changing the commercial future of the country.
The project continues to progress and according to Eduardo Romero Fong, General Coordinator for the Development and Strategy of the Industrial Productive Sector and Well-being, the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec will be inaugurated and operating in 2023, but the specific dates have not been determined.
